If you’re looking to add a sunroom to your home, you may be trying to decide between a 3 season sunroom or a 4 season sunroom. Besides the obvious difference of 1 season, there are additional factors to consider.

The 3 Season Sunroom

A 3 season sunroom is designed to be used in the warmer months of spring, summer and fall. It cannot be used in the winter because it is not connected to your home’s HVAC system so the temperature of the room cannot be regulated. 3 season sunrooms are often a great option for homes in warmer and milder climates that don’t experience a harsh winter. A 3 season sunroom is less costly (about 40-50% less) than a 4 season sunroom since it is not temperature regulated, but it also adds less value than a 4 season sunroom.

The 4 Season Sunroom

4 season sunrooms are air-conditioned and heated for year round enjoyment. They have more insulation than 3 season rooms (which in some cases have none). A 4 season sunroom must follow the same building codes as a standard room addition, meaning it will be more expensive and take longer to construct than a 3 season sunroom, but it will increase your property’s value more than a 3 season room.

How to choose between a 3 season or 4 season sunroom

The most important question a homeowner needs to ask themselves is “how do I want to use this space?” Also, consider what you can do in this space that you can’t do outside. Choosing between a 3 season or a 4 season sunroom has more to do with how you plan to use the space than the construction differences. A 3 season sunroom is a perfect solution if you are looking for a place to entertain during the warmer months, but if you dream of watching the snow fall beside you while you relax in perfect comfort, a 4 season sunroom may be more to your liking.
